So. Very. Sore.

For one reason or another, I haven't run in few days. Take yesterday, for example. I figured I would run when Owen got home from work. But by the time I put Conal down for a nap, I was feeling sluggish and blah. I needed to do something. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to turn on the monitor in Conal's room so I couldn't run on the treadmill.

So, I hit up Exercise TV on Demand for a little workout. Or, in my case, a tough, butt-kicking workout!

Holy cannoli. I did a few different "shows" (I normally stick to The Shred but yesterday I shook it up) and they didn't feel too terribly tough when I was doing them but, today? Today I am sore. So. Very. Sore. My calves, hammies, butt, back, arms, core -- all sore. Sore in a good way, for sure, but sore nevertheless. The workouts kicked this runner's butt!

The workouts had a lot of lateral moves and a lot of jumping rope. Those two movements called some pretty sleepy muscles into action. Running doesn't involve very much lateral motion, afterall. And jumping? Not much of that in running either.

Anyway, I haven't run in a few days but I'm better off! Sounds weird but it is true. Whenever I get on a cross-training kick I feel like my running improves. Using those under-used muscles, and giving a break to the over-used ones, is a good thing!

So, need a break? Exercise TV on Demand really does have some effective programs to get you moving! Check it out, if you haven't already.

And . . . don't forget to check out my Smartwool giveaway, which ends tonight at 11:59pm EST! Go here to enter :-)

And one other thing! I wrote about the new Consumer Reports report on top treadmills here.

Well, that's it. Happy Thursday, everyone!

  1. I love crosstraining! It works the body in a completely different way than running and, like you said, helps us to become better runners! The sore is worth it and lets you know you did a good job :) Happy Thursday!

  2. Crosstraining makes me crazy sore too, and then I can't run! ha ha, same boat, but I'm getting more and more used to it. Sometimes I watch the TV shows too and even those are a good workout. I never expected that! :)

  4. Before I started running I used to love my Turbo Jam DVD's, but they've been neglected this past year. I'm gonna have to bust them out on my next xtrain day too!

  5. I try to throw in some dvds every once in awhile to shake things up. I'm always surprised how sore I am afterwards. Guess that means I should do them more often :)

  8. You realized what muscles get neglected when you cross train after only running. That's why it's so important we do it.

  9. I am glad to hear that crosstraining with the tv program did you in. That is very good news, even though you are sore. I have done some crosstraining before, and that improved my running in every essence. Have a good one.

  11. Using muscles in a way you haven't in a while probably. At least you know it did something for you! Better than a workout that leads you to question whether you got a workout!

  20. I went to the gym today and worked muscles I hadn't used in aaaages. I can't remember the last time I did an exercise that specifically worked my obliques. I'm anticipating pain tomorrow...

  25. Yay for (good) soreness. My paces always improve when I take some time off running and really work on strength. I've never made such a performance jump as when I did the 30 day shred 5-6 days a week (though my poor body couldn't handle it for that long...).

  26. Always a good reminder that cross-training actually IMPROVES running, even though you take a break from it. I did a yoga class today and my body feels SOOO much happier. I'm actually looking forward to my run tomorrow!!
