It's been hot here in upstate New York and it is going to get hotter. After a high of 89 Saturday and 90 yesterday, the forecast is for temps to rise to 92 today.
I'll take it!
We've waited a while for summer weather and now it is here. Yes, it is hot. But the sun is shining. Who can complain about that?
With the return of the high temps, though, I've had to alter my running plans a bit. I ran in the late evening on Saturday and Sunday and I'm taking today off completely. (I'll do some cross-training instead.) I also did something new (for me) before my weekend runs. Although neither run was particularly long (5 miles), I wanted to make sure I didn't run into any hydration problems. So, I drank a lot of water over the course of the day and, about an hour before I went out, I loaded up on salt. A few handfuls of Tostitos. Yum! And they worked. After my hot, hot runs, I felt good -- not depleted like I sometime do in the heat.
In other news, this is my last week of easy running before I kick things into high gear for a 6-week training plan leading up to what I hope will be a 5K PR on October 3rd. I'll share my plan and invite (beg for?) feedback later this week.
Until then, enjoy the sun if it is shining and have a great start to your week!

Enjoy the HEAT.. Look forward to hearing about your SPEEDY 5K plan..
it's hot and sunny here in Syracuse! These are the days when, if I can't get outside for a run, I don't mind getting on the treamill in the A/C!
Everytime I even think about whining about the heat, I force myself to remember January and February and how miserably cold it was. You're right - no whining! Love the pre-run tostito loading. I definitely need to borrow that idea!
It sure is hot out! i cant imagine having to run in it right now!
I was enjoying the cool & rainy summer, but I'll try not to whine. :)
Tostitos have been my salt of choice lately, too. Yum!
Looking forward to seeing your 5K plan!
I'll have to try that salt trick! I sweat buckets when I'm out there - it's pretty nasty.
My ultra-running friends swear by blue corn tortilla chips as fuel for the long, long runs. It provides them salt and some carbs and it settles pretty well so they avoid the over-sugared stomach. Tostitos fall in that line of thinking!
Glad your runs were good, even with the heat!
I can't imagine running in the heat! I rode my bike @ 15 minutes and thought I was dying yesterday. Then again, I didn't try your tricks :) Great job adjusting.
I had to alter my running schedule, too. Doing it at 5am now to beat the heat.
Tee hee, loved the title of your blog today.
California is cooling down...kind of sad!
Love the title! I think staying hydrated throughout the day is so key to a good run. Great job on those runs in this weather.
Just found and am loving reading your blog. Having the opposite problem in New Zealand at the moment...trying to see through the fog, wet muddy feet, dark before and after work...never mind, a headlamp makes me look pseudo-professional. Good luck coping with the heat! You are braver than I.
ooh salty chips. i think i would've sat down and pigged out on chips and salsa and never made it out the door! :)
glad the run went well! i'll have to try the chip-trick, with strict portion controls of course.
You go ahead and enjoy the heat! I personally can't wait for fall! Also, I can't wait to hear your 5K plans!
summer came with a vengeance here too... but yes, sunshine is great :)
**slinks off in shame**
lottsa whining about the heat around here lately :)
Miz.
Can't wait to see the 5K plan. I am interested in how others get it done.
I love the hot hot days of summer too. I'll never complain. Until January. :o)
Looking forward to your training plan!
We here in Austin are at record 100+ days in a row and it's like stepping out into a sauna even in the morning as the low is usually around 80 and that's at like 4am. It's been all treadmill all the time up in here. So I'll still whine while the sun is shining, thank you very much, I miss my neighborhood runs and the wind blowing in my hair instead of the treaddy, shoddy AC, and yet another rock of love episode, hehe.
Thanks for all the positive wishes. They are much appreciated.
It's been so hot here. I have been having trouble just walking from the train to my office in the morning and evening, let alone to anything somewhat strenuous outside.
