The Magic Foot Doctor!

Not only was yesterday my blog birthday but it was also the day of my big appointment with The Magic Foot Doctor, Curer of all Things Podiatry-ish.

I had, you could say, high hopes.

You know, like if the guy had opened a cabinet full of snake oil I would've taken it all, no matter the price. Desperate? Sure, I'll admit to being desperate. But it was more that I had finally decided to see a professional (as opposed to the self-diagnosing doctor that I pretend to be, late at night, alone with the Google search engine) that raised my hopes to ridiculous levels.

What, I now wonder, did I expect the guy to do? Hypnotize my toe? Not likely. My Magic Foot Doctor turned out to be a regular guy. Regular, tie-wearing, polite, business-like doctor guy.

He examined my feet. "You have bunions," he said. I agreed. "And it looks like you have only about 10 percent mobility in the right toe." Hmm... "And some bone spurs." Double hmm... "Maybe a little plantar fasciitis." Triple hmm... "And what we sometimes call a bunionette on the fifth metatarsal." OK, really, this is enough.

Diagnosis: Three bunions, bone spurs, plantar fasciitis. Of the three bunions, only the one on my right big toe is particularly bad because it affects both the top and side of the joint and has limited my toe's mobility considerably. But, Mr. Regular Foot Doctor Guy did say that the others would just get worse if left alone. He took a mold of my feet for orthotics and explained what would be involved in a bunionectomy. I don't even like typing that word, so I'm not going to go into the details. The bottom line is that I would be able to walk and drive after the surgery, but would not be able to run for two to three months.

Let's hope the orthotics work wonders.

I should get the orthotics in about a month and then I'll go back to Mr. Regular Foot Doctor Guy in three months. He expects that the orthotics will make a big difference. I can't wait!

So, that's that.

If you missed my last post, check it out and enter my birthday giveaway (the deadline is midnight tonight)!

so... basically he just ruled out a few things you DON'T have like an ingrown nail, a stress fracture, or broken bone. gee thanks doc!

bunionectomy sounds like a lovely word and procedure. hoping the orthod's do the trick and get you back on your running feet again soon!

Sounds like a productive appointment. Heres hoping the orthotics do their job!

Three bunions? I didn't even know that there were enough big toes for that to be possible!

Sending healing thoughts and hopes that the orthotics do, indeed, work wonders.

Abby -- you're right. There aren't enough big toes for that. Somehow, you can get a bunion on your little toe! Who knew?

My right foot has a bunion on the big toe and the delicate sounding bunionette on the little toe. Fun!

Ack!

Just say no to orthotics.

Sorry. I can't help it.

Flat shoes. ChiRunning. Save your feet!

My aunt had bunion surgery on both her big toes and it really helped alot. She had surgery more than 10 years ago and has really had no trouble at all since then. It might be worth looking into if the orthodics don't work.

Ooh I hope the orthotics work! My Mom had surgery for bunions when we were growing up - she's a runner too. She got back into it after ~2 months (so impatient), and hasn't had any problems since. Might be worth it in the long run? But! always try the first option that Does NOT involve surgery. :) and hope that Regular Foot Dr Guy is nice!

Oh my gosh...you have me freaking out. No running for 2-3 months?? there is NO way I'm going to get mine fixed then. I'd shoot myself! Do you have pain all the time?

Sounds scary I hope you can get out of it with minimum downtime and pain. A friend of mine swears by his orthothic so here's a wish it can solve all your problems.

First, I could never be a podiatrist. I really don't like feet, never mind having to look and touch them all day!

I hope the orthodics work, but you have to wait a month before you get them?!?

I do kinda like the word bunionette. Makes it sound so cute!!

A friend had bad bunions on both feet, and is getting ready to have the second one taken care of.

Not to freak you out, but it was definitely more than 2-3 months recovery. Hopefully yours are simpler to fix. Or better yet, that the orthotics help you avoid surgery!
