A mishmash: Help! Giveaway winners! Silly brain!

Silly brain

I'm going to start with the silly brain: I have one. And it is a bit annoying. It tries to psych me out of things all the time. Like, for example, yesterday's run. I'd planned for an easy 4-miler -- just a nice recovery run after Monday's race.

Oh, but the silly brain had other plans. Your hip hurts. You need more time to digest your food. You're too busy with more important things than running.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

I almost gave in. Silly brain almost won. I don't know what exactly is was (guilt? fear of failure?) but something clicked and I went for the run. It was the best thing for me. My legs loosened up, my hip felt fine, my mood lightened -- take that silly brain!

Giveaway winners

The winners of the UPrinting business cards giveaway are Heather and Mel -- Tall Mom on the Run! Congratulations! I think I have both of your email addresses from your blogs but feel free to send me a note at felicehalf at yahoo dot com in case you'd like to use a different one for ordering the cards. (UPrinting will send you the details directly.)

Help

OK, here's a very non-running thing. I need help with a gift. My mom turned 60 and we're having a little birthday celebration this weekend. I have been struggling with what to get her so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! My mom is a "young" 60 -- she goes to concerts (Dave Matthews, Indigo Girls, etc.) and she's really into gardening. She's not a runner :-( and she's not into gift certificates.

Thanks!!!

Oh! One more thing: I see that I now have 204 followers and I find that amazing. To those 204 of you who've taken the time to follow this blog and who regularly visit and support me through comments and emails . . . THANK YOU!!! I really, really appreciate it!

Good job on getting the run done even though you didn't want to at first!

Maybe she'd like lotion for her gardening hands and gardening gloves? Does she have a banner in her yard? Those small ones might be a nice gift.

Does she like wine? For my mom's bday I got her a 6-bottle wine cellar and a bottle or two of her favorite wine. She loved it!

My brain tries to pull crap like that all the time. Way to tell that brain who's boss!

As far as a gift for your mom, it may be a bit late, but a book with entries from all her friends and relatives is a great milestone bday gift. Have them pick out a photo and write a note to her. Thoughtful and if you have access you can do it from your own computer. Or you can pay a bit and go to a professional.

Great job pushing through the "i don't wannas" :)

Gift ideas. I'll have to think about it, but one we did was a collage or picture frame clock with pics from the family. Also, a picture calendar (with photos from the family instead of puppies or centerfolds :)...but, that's easier for xmas given that the new year isn't for a few months.

For your mom, anything I can think of may take a lot of time or be too last because of ordering online. If you have some pictures of you and your mom from the past few years and of you growing up, I know that Michaels has little 4x6 scrapbook/albums you can put that in. Or maybe a photo keychain where she can load pictures onto it and then put it on her keys for easy access to show ppl pictures of you and your family.

Does your mom like tea? For my mom's last birthday, I got her a bamboo tea box and filled it with different kinds of herbal teas. I'm not sure whether that constitutes a good gift for a 'young 60,' but my mom's in her mid-50s and loves gardening and concerts, too, and she seemed to like it :)

Well, it may not work depending on the timing, but have you thought about concert tickets or tickets to a play or musical that she would enjoy? You could get her the tickets even if the event isn't for awhile, and then plan to go with her and spend an evening together.

If she likes massages or pedicures or anything like that you could get her a spa package...I know my mom loves that kind of stuff but won't spend the money on it for herself.

Happy Birthday to your mom! I'm terrible with gift ideas . . . I usually have to walk around until something jumps out at me.

ooooh was it me or the Heather above me? I guess I'll stalk my inbox to find out, haha! I am also horrible at gift shopping, but happy bday to your mom!!

Happy to be your follower! Tell your Mom I said Happy Birthday. Why don't you get her a really big/cool Gardening basket with all kinds of seeds/tools/gloves/gagets etc. and maybe a really cool Gardening Magazine subscription??
Baskets can be big and glamorous and make a very great display. Everyone likes a pretty present :)
Good luck in your search for the perfect gift!

I stopped buying actual gifts and started buying us things to do together. One year we got pedicures and makeovers, another we went to the theater. etc.

Embrace the silly brain...

Mom's b-day gift idea: a cool, natural bar of soap with some cool herbs like rosemary in it and a nail scrup brush! I keep mine by my sink downstairs from when I come in from the garden. I love it and the rosemary makes my hands smell good for hours!

We love you and your blog, that's why we're here!

My mom is a gardener too! I'm guessing your mom has a lot of the accessories needed, but knee pads, gardening stools, and gloves are always nice options. The book "The Gardening Expert" is also an amazing guide for gardening. Final idea is you could register her for the Seed of the Month club (google it) and she would get a pack of seeds a month, which is kind of neat!

Yay for pushing through! I'm struggling through silly brain today who is telling me that I'm tired and I should rest instead. I got plenty of sleep last night and had a day off workouts so I don't think that's the case. Hopefully logical brain kicks in by the time I leave work. :)
