The one about the headlamp.

So, channeling my inner running geek is, apparently, easier than I ever could have thought:

I love my headlamp!

Yup, the headlamp rocks. It does what it needs to do, which is to light the road and light the runner. It definitely did both. Here's the one that I have (Owen gave it to me for Christmas -- I guess I hinted a little):

It's the Princeton Tec Fuel. You can read all about it here. You can also check it out on Amazon here.

Anyway, I was excited to get the headlamp. I've overcome my fear of the cold and have been running outside whenever there is daylight. The dark has been tough. I'm afraid of the icy patches on my route (and there are many) because my weak little flashlights just don't show the ice well enough. So the headlamp should have been the answer.

Luckily for me, it was. I wore the headlamp during last night's run. It was already completely dark when I headed out but it didn't matter: the headlamp lit my way. I didn't really know what to expect when before using the headlamp. I'm used to the inefficiency of those old, weak flashlights so, wow, the headlamp is WAY better than those. I turned the lamp on high (the first setting) to get full illumination. I could see probably 10 feet in front of me and everything was fairly clear. Ice patches were obvious, as were the sewer grates and some stray pieces of trash. Without the headlamp, I would not have been able to comfortably run last night. I would have slid on some of the black ice, or I would have been running with such a stilted gait and careful step that I probably would have hurt myself. With the headlamp, I ran just as if it was daytime.

Why didn't I get one of these sooner?

Good question. But at least I have one now. So, bring on the dark runs!

Of course, today it is only 10 degrees and the gusting winds are bringing the "feels like" temperature down to -10. MINUS 10. Too cold for this gal, even with the headlamp. And the fresh new gloves. I'll sit out the run and do something else. Tomorrow is supposed to be a balmy 26. I'll take what I can get!

Have a good day!

What a great idea! I would love to be able to run outside after work during these dark winter days. I am going to look into the headlamp- thanks for the info!

Perfect timing...I need a new head lamp. thanks for the review!!

I'm dreading my run today...it's so cold and windy out. But I just can't justify doing it on the treadmill.

So glad you like the headlamp! I gave B.o.B a really hard time about the headlamp and how geeky they look but after using one during the Ragnar Relay I now totally get why they are useful! Yay for a great night run!

Good thing you like that headlamp in case you find yourself wanting to explore a cave or do some coal mining while you are out running. Seriously - they are great. I don't have one but borrowed one when I ran the relay in August. It saved my life b/c it was pitch black on those back roads. They really come in handy.

I think the headlight is a great idea! I would like it because in my neighborhood and most of South Carolina streets, we do not have a lot of street lights to help us along the way! Thanks for the review :-)

I have a princeton headlamp, too and I find that I have to wear a hat with it otherwise it just falls down my face while I run. How about you? I do love it since I can see when I run and can also BE seen. Good luck with the weather!

Kate A -- Good point. I'm not sure. I wear a fleece headband when it is cold and windy, and I wore the headlamp over that. I didn't even think to mention that. I haven't worn it w/out the headband so I'm not sure if it will fall. I'll have to pay attention to that!

I used a headlamp on my relay, but I can't see myself using it just for a late run...not sure why

So glad the headlamp is working! Enjoy the night runs...late this week or next of course. -10 would be no fun!

How cool. I'm too chicken to run in the dark - smiles! This is my first time here, looking forward to reading more.

Oh yes, headlamps rock. Its required gear for me, especially in the winter. Even night runs in the summer are better. Except the moths see you from a long way away and charge straight at your head.

If it was that cold here, I'd wait until tomorrow, too. Glad you can see on your night runs now!

I LOVE night runs so I can use my headlamp as well! It's such a different running experience. Great!

I love my headlamp and my little blinky lights that I clip all over me...it feels like Christmas when I run. Hope you have a warm run tomorrow!

I use my headlight for all my morning runs this time of year - works like a charm. Unfortunately they still haven't invented a weightless windshield to deal with all this cold weather. :)

My hubby wont let me run in the dark headlamp or not.. LOL!! He keeps telling me that aif we buy a BIG dog then I can run with it for protection.. So I asked the boys what they would name a dog, my 4 year old said "Mater" LOL!!

I got a gift card for a headlamp which I will be buying this weekend. I still won't run alone in the dark (I am a scardy cat) but my friends and I all said we would get them so we could go running together after work!

I didn't realize the lamps lit up such a large area, that's great it works so well for you...enjoy!

A headlamp! What a great idea! I hadn't even thought about that. Might feel a little silly running with it, but who cares, right?

Ick on the temps. When it gets below the mid 40s here I wimp out, so you are much braver than I!

You are hardcore my dear friend. I wouldn't even venture outside ever!

Thanks for the review on the headlamp. I'm really on the fence about these!

Woohoo winter running!
I decided to opt for the headlamp this winter less to see where I was going, and more to be seen by others. I've even strapped my flashing red bike taillight onto the dog's leash (she runs with me). :o)
Thanks for the review. Keep running, and stay warm! Happy New Year!

I love mine too (I have a black diamond Icon one.) It's one of the most important pieces of safety gear we as runners can wear, IMHO. Glad to hear you like yours too.
