The tongue bruise.

Sounds weirder than it is. The bruise is actually on my ankle, but caused by the tongue of my beloved running shoes. My trusty Brooks Addictions, the shoes I adore and have worn for years and years and years with great success, are causing me pain.

Sad day. Sad few weeks, really, because these shoes have well over 100 miles on them. I guess what is happening is that the tongue of my right shoe is digging into my ankle. I've never had this happen before! Like I said, I've been wearing Brooks Addictions for years and have never had a problem with them at all. I love 'em!

But, this new pair has been different. The tongue bothered me on my first run and I chalked it up to the shoes being new and needing to be broken in a bit. Then I felt it on the second run. And the third, fourth, and so on. I've tried moving the tongue to the side and that doesn't help. I've also tried lacing my shoes differently and that doesn't help either.

Now, I'm bruised:

The photo doesn't do my bruise justice (but it sure does show how veiny my feet are!). Imagine the bruise a little worse than shown and you'll be right on.

So, here's what I'm wondering: Has the tongue of your running shoe ever bothered you? What have you done? Should I send the shoes back? Should I try cutting the offending edge off of the tongue?

It's such a bummer. Black toenails I can handle but bruised ankles? Not caused by clumsy tripping (who, me?)? No thanks. My shoes are otherwise fine and exactly as expected. It's just this slight pain and the bruising that I don't go for.

Anyway, that's that. Have a great Tuesday, everyone!

I can not say that I have had that problem before, but if they are the same shoe and you have not had problems before. I would go back to where you purchased them, and ask to try a different pair of the same kind to see if that is the problem. Definitely return the shoes. Hope it works out for you. Have a good one.

haven't had any tongue bruising but i would say maybe its that shoe. Sometimes they can be defective and just not work right. My bball shoes one year were horrible that way, and we got the same kind the next year and they were fine...

OH NO! That's the worst when your perfect shoes suddenly start giving you trouble. Hopefully it's just an 'off' pair. Sounds like breaking them in is not going to work, so I'd probably try snipping.

Good luck!!!

I think everyone is right...if these are the same kicks you have always used it is prob this shoe ONLY. Go back to where you got them and I am sure they will help you. Or, Brooks is a really cool company, if you contact them they would prob help instatly. I cannot say that I have had tounge issues, but maybe you're tying your shoes too tight? Just a thought...I would bring them back anyway and see what if that helps - they are still relatively new.

Try shoe surgery! Hope it works and the bruise heals soon.

I had a pair of shoes that did that to me, but I thought it was just me. These shoes though, I had had for several months, and then all of the sudden they started hurting, and I couldn't ever figure out why. I just ended up wearing them for every day, but even then sometimes they will hurt my foot.

i've never gotten a bruise but i have had the occasional rubbing/blister from the tongue. luckily it just seems to be temper mental at times and goes away after a week or so. not sure what to suggest... if the store won't let you try out another pair, i guess operate?

Same advice as above - take em back if you can, snip snip if you can't. Hope the bruise doesn't hurt too bad and you heal u

I have been pleased with the same Aasics forever and this time went with a different pair. I'm convinced they make me faster (bonus) because they feel WAY lighter, but my right foot has molded it weirdly so it's... not quite uncomfortable, but kinda off. But the shoes I'm wearing today have almost the same problem. So maybe it really IS just my silly tootsies.

However, in January, I am purchasing a replacement same as my old Aasics *just in case* the other ones don't hold out until race day or don't do high mileage well. Worst case, I have a replacement pair of shoes I *know* work for me. These new ones may just become my speedy sneaks.

What a bummer!

I'd definitely contact Brooks - I've heard really good things about the company. Who knows? You may even get a couple free pairs out of it!

Never have had that problem other than I've tied my shoes too tight and that caused a bruise. As pricey as those puppies are, I'd certainly try to take them back. I had a hole wear though on the side of one pair after two runs and they took them back with no problems. I had to change shoes after about 6 years in the same ones; my feet were going numb in the latest version - I even ran Boston in numb feet! It's such grueling process finding shoes. ugh.

Ouch! I was a little worried about the title. Sounded like you could have been doing something kinky.

How weird! If it were both I would say its something different they're doing. But only one sounds like a fluke. Definately contact the company! Good luck!

If you can't return them, I had a scratch on my ankle and my shoe tongue rubbed against it, making it worse, so I tucked the tongue up underneath the shoelaces when I ran until the scratch healed. Worked fine.

That sounds horribly irritating...and painful! I have not had a tongue problem crop up before. Here's to you figuring out a solution quickly and painlessly.

Wow! That sucks. I have no advice, but you've gotten some good stuff above. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

agree with the others, contact Brooks, but that sucks with your fav pair/brand starts messing with you! Good luck, keep us posted!

someone in our run group had the same sort of thing happen....and it ended up giving her serious foot problems. They said they model had not changed but it must have so she switched out to a totally different model.

Oh wow...the same exact thing happened to me with my first pair of Brooks Addiction. It was the right shoe, too. I almost performed shoe surgery but my husband talked me out of it, and after about 2 months of suffering either my ankle got used to it or the tongue got softer and no longer bothered me. I bought a pair of Ariel and wondered if they would do the same thing, but I've never had anymore problems. Good luck with your tongue issue!
