Winter marathon training

. . . means:

  • 12 miles in 21 degree weather that feels like 5 degrees, thanks to Mr. Wind Chill.
  • Layers: Sock layers. Legging layers. Pant layers. Shirt layers. Jacket layers. Glove layers. Mitten layers. Layers.
  • Lots of laundry (see above).
  • Frozen water bottles.
  • Frozen gels.
  • Frozen nose.
  • Hot showers. Long hot showers.
  • Becoming friends with the treadmill.
  • Excitement when the forecast is for "sunny and 30 degrees."
  • Outta-hand excitement when the temp is 40+.
  • Happy dreams and scary nightmares about what the 26.2 on May 6th might bring.
Winter marathon training. It. Is. On.

Yup. On.

Have a great week!

I can totally relate...I posted about how much laundry I generated on our SERIOUSLY cold run on Sunday.
Keep 'er up!

I did 10 miles yesterday in the same weather! Yikes. I definitely feel you on the LONG hot shower. That was my savior yesterday.

I shouldn't even comment here because I was just complaining about how "cold" it was yesterday and when I checked the temp, it was 59 degrees! I know I am a weakling but that's what San Diego does to you. I love winter marathon training because the temperature is perfect here for running at this time of year. Crisp, cool air. :) Maybe you should buy a winter home here in San Diego. Start playing the lotto!

Oh the laundry! I know what you are talking about. I think ADP fill the washer when we both run on one winter day with all the layers.

So just out of curiosity...how DO you keep the water and gels from freezing on your long runs..?

On my long runs I carry my fluids with me on a waist pack that has some clip-on attachments for water bottles, and the gels are in the pack. However, I haven't been in sub-30 weather yet, so those things freezing didn't occur to me.

impressive! I've never run in weather that cold, I think 23 is my all time low.

My thoughts exactly!! Monday morning it was 5F when I ran but then it was 40F when I left work at 5pm! Crazy!

Yup, Yup, Yup. Sounds like my Sunday. Great job getting it done in the weather. What marathon are you running?

I'm winter maarathon training too, for the first time. It's tough (although this has been a pretty decent winter overall). It's also hard mentally!

@macnic -- I'm signed up for the New Jersey Marathon on 5/6. Can't wait!

Boy do I know what you mean! I'm out there training for Boston, and I can't believe how fortunate we've been this winter in the Northeast....not like last year!

I totally hear ya. Only ramping up for a half, so it's a good bit easier, but it's still damn cold out.
