Running away.

That's how I felt yesterday. Like running away.

And so I did.

I ran for 5 miles and although it wasn't exactly away, since the miles were logged in my basement on the treadmill, it worked. I ran out the crud. Shook off the last of the migraine fog. Gave myself a break.

A run like yesterday's run -- the kind that you absolutely need, that can turn your day around -- is the best. Five miles to a better day. Maybe not the best day ever (the laundry still refused to fold itself) but better. And who doesn't like better?

I like better! And, better still, I like gimpy, broken, painful, bunionized toes that are starting to feel better. No thanks to the podiatrist appointment that is still over a month away.

I had an "aha!" moment a week or so ago: My toe and yoga do not get along. It's true. All of those downward dogs and whatnots were forcing my toe into positions that weren't terribly painful during the yoga but that caused a lot of inflammation and pain afterward. Pain with a capital P. Pain pain.

So I stopped doing the yoga and went back to Jillian Michael's Shred for my non-running days and justlikethat the toe is feeling a lot better. The joint is no longer as swollen and red (it was not a pretty sight), and the pain pain is gone. I still have a little lower-case p pain, but I'm used to that.

Lesson learned.

But, ugh. I liked doing yoga. I contemplated giving it a go wearing a pair of sneakers to protect my toes from having to bend too much. But, no. Wearing my clunky Brooks while flowing through the moves seems somehow counter to the whole yoga thing, you know?

So that's that. No more yoga. At least for now. Until Mr. Magic Foot Doctor fixes me up with a mere tap of his Magic Foot Doctor Wand. Because it will be that simple and pain free. I'm sure of it.

Hope you're having a great a day!

I looove those kind of runs, too! It just makes you feel good about... everything. I need a run like that. :-)

Hmmm... maybe you need to look into special socks or slippers for yoga? Do those exist??

Hopefully you will be able to get back to yoga after you see the doctor and get your toe feeling better!

Sucks about the yoga thing. Yes there is a lot of toe bending. Guess running shoes and yoga don't mix.

Bummer to give up something you like, but being pain free is always a good idea. I sure hope that the foot Doctor is Magic....darn future appointments!!

I am convinced that running has kept me from snapping on numerous occasions.

yoga days are so much more pleasant than shred days . . . but i respect your decision to leave the downward dogs lie for a while. i'm glad you had a good run!

SOOO glad you had a "leave on the road" run (or, leave it on the TM, whatever)...I LOVE those runs!

I'm sorry yoga and your toe aren't getting along - my left foot and Kenpo karate don't agree either...following your body's cues can't be a bad thing. :-)

Those awesome & needed runs are the best!

Funny thing about me & yoga - if I get too ambitious with the poses, I end up with a headache.

I love how running bounces all the crud out of my head! I'm glad you figured out the whole yoga thing. Hopefully you'll be able to get back into it without it bothering your toe.

Running can really make things feel so much better. Glad the toe isn't as swollen. Can you modify any of the yoga in which you won't put so much stress on your toe?

Glad you got your run in and felt better. The toe story is really interesting. I bet you'd have it all figured out before you even see him/her.

I'm glad you had a great 5 miler! Running on the treadmill is better than nothing!

I hope your bunions get better soon. My husband is suffering from one, too. His is the worst in the morning--swollen and sore. He can only run in the afternoon.

Nothing like a nice run to make the day look brighter!

Sorry to hear you won't be able to do any yoga for a while, but hopefully it will make your foot feel better until you finally get in for that appointment.

Bumma about the yoga :-( Jillian is better anyway, right? ;-)

I'm glad your toe is feeling better. That's really strange that yoga is the culprit, my understanding and experience has always been that yoga can correct so many things with alignment that it actually heals and soothes things.

Are you practicing at a studio with a teacher to help correct your alignment? If you decide to come back to it, perhaps you could look into some yoga toe socks. Those might help keep your toes aligned and spaced properly?

It's always good to get one of those powerful, head-clearing runs. Love those!
