What's done is done.

I had high hopes of being "that mom" who runs right up until the day she delivers her baby. High, high hopes.

My running had been going well. I ran four races while pregnant and put up some decent times. I logged up to 20 miles a week until well past the halfway mark of the pregnancy. I ran with friends, I ran alone. I enjoyed it. Thoroughly enjoyed running while pregnant. And that is why I had such high hopes.

And then those hopes were dashed.

Almost two weeks ago, I had gone for a super 4 miler with two friends and felt great. Two days later, I set out for another run and my body told me I was done. "You're done," it said. I swear! It spoke to me!

"I'm really not. Not done. Not me. I'm still in week 30. So. Not. Done," I said.

"No, I'm serious. You're done. I'm walking," my body replied. And that's what it did. About a half mile into the run it decided to walk. We walked on for another two miles and that was that. I figured I would accept the failed run, move on, and try again another day.

Which is what I did. Two days after Failed Run #1 I set out again.

"Um, did you not hear me the first time?" my body asked. "I told you we were done."

"But, well, yeah. I'm not ready to be done," I said, probably in a bit of a whine, while trying to push on.

Body laughed. We walked. Failed Run #2 was in the books.

The next time I set out, a few days later, I didn't even make it out the door. Nope, I just knew that it wasn't to be. I felt the twinge below my belly and the other things that are just more than you need to know and so I bagged it. Failed Run #3 didn't even have a chance.

"Thank you," my body told me.

So it is that at 32 weeks into my pregnancy, I have officially hung up my running shoes.

Consider me bummed. And I mean bummed.

But not despondent. Nope! I'm proud that I ran as much as I did and now I'll turn my focus to walking and getting back to those plies, squats and lunges that helped me power through labor and delivery for my first son. I'm going to miss running but I'm somewhat looking forward to the two months of cross training. Bring it on!

There you have it, folks. I hope you'll bear with me over the next 8 weeks or so. I'll do my best not to complain!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and is having a good week!

~ Felice

32 weeks pregnant and you were running! Pretty awesome girl! Nothing to feel bad about. :) Smart to listen to your body. I bet your baby will run before it crawls!

You are amazing! Most women use pregnancy as an excuse to overeat & become lazy - not you!

Totally random question but did you use pain meds when you delivered the first time? And if you want to be finished I think that's great - but I've had many a failed run- weeks of failed runs - only then to have my body *tell me* it's okay to run again and far :) So maybe you aren't done afterall?? ;)

Hi, I love reading about running while pregnant. I am 26 weeks pregnant and i am managing to run couple times a week. I was never pregnant before so i have to see if by week 32 my body shuts on me, Maybe sooner. You should be proud of yourself... it is amazing you are only 8 weeks aways before you meet your Baby :))

Way to go and way to listen to your body. These 8 weeks will fly by, especially since you'll be getting ready for that little bundle of joy. Congrats on running for this long, enjoy your cross training, you'll be stronger than ever when you come back.

I would say good job listening to your body! Before you know it you will have a new little one and be running when you can fit it in!

32 weeks is pretty darn good. You did just fine, and remember that this is all temporary. Keep walking though! You and baby still need it. :)

Congratulations on running up until your 32nd week! Incredible!

Now all of that cross-training will whip you into excellent shape for labor and recovery.

As others have said, congrats for running so far into your pregnancy. It's very cool that you're just listening to your body and surrendering to its needs. You've done what many women can't do even when they aren't pregnant...very impressive.

Good job making it this far! 32-33 is about where my body called it quits too. I delivered last week though and I can tell you that it made a world of difference to keep going that long! I feel fabulous and am antsy to the road again. :)
Keep on keepin' on!

Your blog really inspires me, and I'm certain your cross training will keep you very, very strong! It's great to learn about how you listen to your body, which is key for all athletes.

32 weeks is so amazing. I'm sure your obgyn wants to put a picture of you up in his office for all patients to see! Enjoy being pregnant, the last weeks are always the hardest but end up going fast! Get ready for that new sweet baby... You'll bounce back so much faster after you deliver from being so fit and listening to your body!

You should be really proud of yourself for doing so well. Often, pregnancy causes women to find reasons to be lazy- but you went out and did your thing!

WTG!

You've done great - and you'll get it back quickly afterwards. I stopped running at 32 weeks w/ my first and 20 weeks w/ my twins. You'll be running again soon enough :-)

Well I think you did awesome! Don't beat yourself up too much! I've started a lunges challenges that runs for one month! Maybe you could take it on! And what are plies? I think I need to look this up!

Don't feel defeated! You are still an amazing mom and runner. Maybe you can enjoy some forced time off? Or who knows, maybe in a day or so you will be up for a run again? If I sound clueless, I am, noooo idea what it's like to run while prego, let alone be prego! Enjoy your walks and squats!!

Great job. Relax with some good walking and enjoy the miracle.

By the way, I'm an Upstate NY runner: Utica, NY. So pleased to discover your site. :)

You've inspired pregnant runners and those of us who aren't pregnant, too, with your determination to keep running. You're wise to take a break when you need one. Stay healthy!

You have done amazingly well to have run for so long. If you ever feel like a walk, I'd love to meet you somewhere and we can catch up. I'm always game for a walk.

What an inspiration! I do not have children and I am not pregnant (nor do I have plans to at the moment), but I have ALWAYS said that I would run as long as I could through term. I will definitely keep my eye on your bloggie! :D
