I've mentioned before that I have some sort of problem with registering for (committing to) races in advance. Once I register, I'm fine. I know, for example, that I am going to run the Freihofer's Run for Women 5k on May 30th. I am all registered and I have no doubt that I will do it.
But, oh, there is something going on with me and other races. I have such a fear of dropping out or not being able to handle the training and bleck. I love racing! What is going on here? Major conflicts among my id, ego and superego? And which part is winning?
The thing is, I don't know and, even if I did, I'm not sure I'd know what to do with that information. Fight the superego? Can you do that? Again, I don't know! I should just give up the faux-analysis and move on to the matter at hand.
So, here goes. I am looking at these upcoming races:
6/13 -- Run with the Trojans 4-mile
7/7 -- Colonie Mile (I've never run a mile race!)
7/12 -- Boilermaker 15k
8/22 -- Clove Run 5k
9/12 -- Maple Leaf Half Marathon (VT)
Um, no. I have not committed to any of them. Yet! But I'm thinking about it. I probably won't run both the mile and the 15k since they are the same week so one of them will be off the schedule. But the others I can do. I'm pretty sure about that. Almost confident. Almost.
In other news, the chilly weather seems to have blown out of town so I'll be hitting some outdoor play this week with my toddler. He's a golfing fanatic these days, although his game involves hitting the ball and having me retrieve it. (We're working on his retrieval skills.) I'll be one tired-out mama this week, I'm sure.
Have a great day!

I think I have the opposite problem - I can't stop signing up for races. :) That ooks like a great sort-of-plan.
Have fun with Conal this week!
I KNOW that I will be the same way...it is like once you hit the REGISTER button the world will Zap you and it will be taken away. Thankfully on one income I am limited on what races I can do.
I am TOTALLY curious how you would do in the mile... hmmmmm..
I say pick one and register to get it out of the way....then go slowly from there..
my problem is signing up too far in advance and getting hurt, forcing me to not run :( good luck with the decision! :)
I heard that the Run with the trojans race is not a very organized event and is very small. I've never done it before so its just what I heard.
You should run the Valley Cats Home Run 5k on 6/6 - you get 4 tickets to a valley cats game with registration!
I have the problem of signing up for too much stuff. I am signed up for a 1/2 in March 2010!!
Oooh, I really want to do the Boilermaker too, but its in the middle of marathon training and I'm afraid I will mess myself up. I don't have a good record of racing during training.
The Colonie Mile? I've never done the mile race before either. Hmmmmm.
If I can get myself injury free, I'd love to run the Boilermaker.
Looks like a great plan!
You're registered for a race! I didn't realize you'd registered for Freihofer's, and several weeks in advance, too. Sounds like the superego (or whoever) is going down.
Or is that a race you have to sign up for in advance, because it actually fills up?
The Vermont race sounds fantastic, but I love longer distances. Good luck - it sounds like you have identified good options!
You should totally do the Boilermaker. It is my favorite race ever, the distance is unique and I just love having all the people cheering for every single step of the way! It would be so awesome if you ran it!
You can clearly do the work! So maybe your subconscious is really frugal?
You should add Steamtown to the list of non-committed races :)
i tend to delay registering too... then i can usually talk myself out of it when the price jumps (for bigger/further away races anyway). i've also jumped in a race at the last minute too though. good luck deciding. maybe pick a couple that you WILL sign up for and run and then leave the rest as on-a-whim-races?
I'm with Marlene, I have the opposite problem! I tend to register for a race on a whim, and THEN stop and think "what about the kids, and school, and work, and how am I going to get there, and where am I going to stay...." etc. Oye! I'm going to have to look into the Maple Leaf half, I've never heard of it! I grew up in VT, before my running days, and would love to return to race. Anyway, love the blog (i'm new here!) happy running ~Heather~
I think we have a term for that- it's called commitophobia...haha. I wrote a whole post about it last year. Look it up in my archives if you want a laugh...
Good luck overcoming your ailment.
I am totally the same way!! I will see all kinds of fun things...but I am afraid to say I'll do it! Once I do I'm super excited..not sure why this is
Depending on the race, I'm kind of the same way. I just signed up for something on the 31st (less than 2 weeks away) - it took me that long to commit. And I'm thinking of signing up for something on June 6th and don't want to sign up until next week.
On the other hand, I also signed up for a sprint tri in Aug. Maybe because I know I can't fly by the seat of my pants - for that one I have to train
I tend to hit the "REGISTER NOW" and then leave the window up on the internet for daysss before deciding - YES i want to run this! So, yah, commitment issues? I gots 'em too. Then I sign up and I'm like yessss Can't wait!!
A MILE race? That sounds crazy. I like it!
I rarely sign up for races in advance unless I have to, even though it costs extra to register late or the day of the race. I think it's a little commitment phobia, even though I fully intend to run the race.
No matter which races you decide to do, I think you'll do awesome!
A wee bit of commitment-phobia never killed anyone. I'm the same way. I'm afraid that if I sign up in advance, something will happen to jinx it. But your list looks great. The important thing is, you are running and are fit to do any of these races, when they come around.
ohOHOH!
you nailed why Ive never done/trained entirely for a race.
I have collected a million forms and never can seem to make that crucial IM DOING THIS commitment.
which is totally why I (in my head0 go from not one race to marathon in a different state (hello disney!) because then Id HAVE to commit!
Have you noticed I haven't signed up for a race! The Maple Leaf Half sounds really nice. It will be so pretty up in VT in September.
Run the boilermaker with me - run the boilermaker with me!! Seriously it's huge, and there are so many spectators - I can't wait!!
